From a historic preservationist's perspective nothing is more upsetting
than witnessing a vintage American barn held captive by flames
intentionally set by a local fire department. Or a classic building
flattened by a mindless mass of steel and buried in the earth like a
spiritless body. Whether crippled by Mother Nature's erratic changes,
ill-maintained after years of hard pressed utility or just swallowed by
the churning teeth of encroaching cities, many of our historic American
architectural icons are vanishing. Outliving their usefulness for the
current proprietors charged with their safekeeping, barns, traditional
farm buildings and age old commercial and residential structures are
bowing to a new growing development- leaving a gaping hole in the
agricultural and historic landscapes.
It was perfectly clear to some that these discarded buildings, steeped
in tradition and charged with the timeless energy of consummate
craftsmen, were valuable to a new breed of architectural aficionado.

Whole buildings could be found on America's byways being transported to a new location; deconstruction crews carefully disassembled barns, log buildings and homes and shipped them for reconstruction projects across the country; carefully retrieved components were recovered and incorporated into historic preservation projects, integrated into contemporary buildings or fashioned into new forms of architecture. These buildings, and the inherent energies of our forebears who claimed the materials from virgin lands, were now being "reclaimed" and reborn for further use.
